How to Administer Penile Injection Therapy
Erectile dysfunction in males can be treated with penile injection therapy or intracavernosal injection therapy. Medications that increase blood flow to the penis are often injected into the penile shaft.
The patient takes this drug before every sexual encounter. First, the drug is injected into the side of the penis shaft with a syringe that has a very fine needle. Five to 10 minutes later, an erection begins to form, and it can last anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.
The best pharmaceutical mix is created by combining several drugs according to the severity of the ED. For instance, the injections Bimix, Trimix, and Quadmix each combine two, three, and four treatments, respectively.
How Is a Penile Injection Given?
Preparations in General
-
Start by using any sanitizer to wash your hands.
-
Gather the medication, the syringe, and an alcohol pad.
Preparing the Syringe
Prepare the syringe with the medication by following these directions:
-
Gather your medication from the fridge.
-
Remove the lid of the vial.
-
Use an alcohol-soaked cotton pad to wipe off the top of the vial.
-
Remove the cap protecting the needle of the syringe.
-
Place the plunger in the appropriate position by pulling it up.
-
Stick the needle in the vial's rubber cap.
-
Depress the plunger to transfer air from the syringe into the vial.
-
Keep the syringe in place and pull back on the plunger to extract the medication from the vial.
-
Tap the side of the syringe to expel trapped air. To reinject the air bubbles into the vial, just draw the plunger in and out.
Where Should the Penile Injections
Be Given?
Medications should be injected at the base of the penis shaft. Keep the following in mind:
-
Administer the injection at the 2 o’clock and 10 o’clock areas.
-
Steer clear of injecting only at the apex of the penis (around 12 o'clock). This is crucial because injecting too close to the penis's top might cause harm to the penis's veins and nerves.
-
Never inject yourself at the 6 o'clock position where your penis meets your body; otherwise, you risk bleeding of the urethra.
-
Maintain a schedule of alternating injection sites.
-
To prevent infection, avoid repeatedly injecting in the same location, as penile scarring and curvature might occur.
What Additional Methods Are There for Treating Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction treatment options outside penile injection have also demonstrated efficacy.
● Therapy with Low-intensity Shockwave Therapy (LiST)
● Therapy with platelet-rich plasma (penile shot)
● Vacuum erection device
● Oral ED drugs
